Custom Home Showcases Smarter, Safer Disaster-Resistant Living

RALEIGH, N.C., Sept. 15, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Rufty Homes wants to help house hunters learn how the newest building technologies can make their homes smarter and safer places to live.

The homebuilder's new state-of-the-art showcase house in Cary, N.C., will be used to demonstrate how superior construction methods and up-front planning can benefit homeowners. It will be open to visitors for the next year, beginning with the Parade of Homes, which starts September 27.

According to company president Jon Rufty, the home incorporates a variety of new building technologies "that provide an overall superior quality home as it relates to comfort, energy efficiency, low maintenance, quietness, durability, healthiness, environmental sensitivity and long-term investment -- as defined by outside experts." For the owner and their family, this home also offers extra protection and safety from everyday events and natural disasters.

The 9,789-square-foot custom home is one of the first in North Carolina to incorporate the construction standards of the "Fortified ... for safer living" program, an initiative of the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS).

In addition to being built with cast-in-place, steel reinforced, concrete, the Cary house has other disaster-resistant materials and techniques protecting it from high wind, hail, wildfire, and flooding. Some of these measures include a sturdier roof with increased moisture protection; stronger connections between the roof, walls and foundation; and pressure-resistant doors and windows.

Rufty, in partnership with Security Building Group, has also built three oceanfront duplexes on Topsail Island with added protection to meet the "Fortified" standards for coastal construction.
