Kineto Wireless to Bring Mobile over Wireless LAN Solutions to Market

Mobile/Broadband Convergence, Leveraging Wireless LAN Technology, Offers New and Enhanced Voice and Data Services to Mobile Handset and Broadband Gateway Users

CANNES, France, Feb. 23, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Kineto Wireless (www.kinetowireless.com), a key innovator and the leading supplier of Mobile over Wireless LAN (MoWLAN) solutions, today announced that it is developing and marketing MoWLAN solutions enabled by silicon and software solutions from Broadcom Corporation, a leading provider of broadband communications and wireless LAN networking technologies.

MoWLAN solutions enable mobile phone users to seamlessly handoff their cellular voice and data services to a broadband cable or DSL network using a wireless LAN connection. The convergence of cellular and broadband networks using Bluetooth(r) or 802.11g wireless LAN connections can dramatically reduce the cost of providing mobile services compared to existing 2.5 and 3G network technologies.

In addition, MoWLAN solutions can deliver much higher bandwidth to mobile phones, greatly enhancing the multimedia and data service user experience for subscribers, which will in turn encourage subscribers to use their mobile phones as their primary communications device. This will lead to increased revenue growth opportunities for fixed and mobile service providers.

"Better in-building service and coverage is really the next frontier for mobile providers," according to Mark Lowenstein, Managing Director of Mobile Ecosystems (www.m-ecosystem.com). A July 2003 presentation from The Yankee Group entitled "Wireless Leadership Summit 2003" by Linda Barrabee and Knox Bricken, confirms this analysis stating that the average subscriber now uses their mobile phone for nearly 20% of their total in-building or home calling and that more than 50% of subscribers would use their mobile phone as their primary phone if coverage, quality and pricing were equal or better than that of landline services.

"As the leading provider of wireless, networking and broadband access chipsets, Broadcom is a natural partner to help us bring MoWLAN solutions to the mass market," stated John O'Connell, President and CEO of Kineto Wireless.

"Kineto is one of the leaders in the race to converge broadband access and handset RF technologies to give consumers new and exciting product capabilities and service providers more revenue generating opportunities. As such, we're excited to be working with them to improve the mobile phone user experience for potentially millions of consumers," commented Dr. Henry Samueli, Broadcom's Co-Founder and Chief Technical Officer.

"Our collaboration will help accelerate the widespread availability of MoWLAN-capable broadband gateway solutions from leading manufacturers. This effort will culminate in commercial deployments by fixed line and wireless carriers in the second half of 2004," said Daniel A. Marotta, Group Vice President, Broadband Communications Group.
