It is the much-anticipated follow-up to Frameshift's 2003 critically acclaimed Unweaving the Rainbow debut, which featured Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie.

Frameshift mastermind Henning Pauly describes An Absence of Empathy as a heavy soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist. His compositions are visual, and coupled with Bach's metal/Broadway approach, achieves a synthesis rarely heard in popular music today. Musically, its modern Prog-Metal roots are more on the subtle side as, on this project, a more epic mentality has been brought to the fore.
