StockPickReport Commentary -- April 04, 2006

I got this the other day:

Hello Don, I've listened to your last web cast a few times and I'd like very much to get your input on how you select stocks to analyze (narrowing the field) as you say.

That's a great question. I use a proprietary blend of Stochastics, RSI, MACD, and trend-line analysis to find my initial "basket of stocks" each day.

Another investor writes:

I live in Youngstown, Ohio which is unimpressive but that is the hook to the Debartlo family. I am not from here and find the goings on hereabouts quite a mess. I have followed the "rise" of (Simon Property Group) and decided to take a closer look -- like insider selling. It tells quite a tale. Any comments?

Look, insider selling is not always an indicator of anything more than what you should do with stocks you bought at lower prices. I mean, if you look at the chart on Simon Property Group (NYSE:SPG), you find that the stock has almost tripled in the last few years. I would be selling some stock, too, if I was an insider.

The stock is at the top end of a trading channel that extends for three years. The risk of a pullback to the bottom of the channel is significant. So, without even needing to look for "fundamental" reasons why insiders are selling, the charts tell me it's totally in line with what the stock did for the last three years.
