Airvana Debuts EV-DO Rev-A, Fixed-Mobile Convergence, and Air-to-Ground Products at CTIA 2006

LAS VEGAS, April 5, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Airvana, Inc. (www.airvana.com), an innovator and leader in mobile broadband infrastructure based on 3G 1xEV-DO air interface technology, today announced it will demonstrate three new products at CTIA 2006: the Universal Access Gateway (UAG) for fixed-mobile convergence (FMC); the ipBTSTM C10 compact EV-DO Rev-A base station for enhanced in-building coverage; and the skyBTS(tm) base station for air-to-ground communication.

The Airvana UAG is a highly reliable, standards-based network element that provides carrier-class security, IP mobility, quality of service, and accounting for carrier-grade FMC deployments. It allows operators to offer voice, data and multimedia services over any IP-based access network with the security, mobility and QoS that their customers expect. Airvana will demonstrate voice handoffs from CDMA2000 1xRTT to WiFi using the NewStep Networks Voice Call Continuity (VCC) solution and the UAG.

The Airvana ipBTS C10 is a 3.5-inch high, rack-mountable, compact 1xEV-DO Rev-A base station aimed at providing in-building coverage. It supports the same set of EV-DO features that are supported on other Airvana base station products. Airvana will demonstrate 1xEV-DO Rev-A applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP), Video Surveillance, and fast data uploads using the ipBTS C10.

The Airvana skyBTS is a base station specially designed for air-to-ground communication. It meets the stringent specifications of the spectrum allocated by the FCC for this purpose. Special software drivers enable very large cell sizes and correct for Doppler shift. Since the skyBTS uses 1xEV-DO Rev-A as the air-interface it can transmit at a peak rate of 3.1 Mbps to the aircraft and receive data at 1.8 Mbps from the aircraft. This broadband connection can be shared among passengers using Wi-Fi or any other access technology.

"Consumers and enterprises alike expect mobility and broadband speeds," said Randy Battat, CEO of Airvana. "From airline cabins to high-speed EV-DO networks to new access technologies, Airvana is focused on enabling service providers to deliver mobile broadband -- everywhere."

Airvana is a market leader in mobile broadband radio access network (RAN) infrastructure for CDMA2000 1xEV-DO. The company just announced that its 2005 revenues surpassed $100 million, marking eight consecutive profitable quarters. In those eight quarters, Airvana quadrupled its workforce. The company is cash flow positive. In March 2006 Airvana was recognized by Massachusetts Network Communications Council as Company of the Year and for Fastest Growth in Massachusetts.

1xEV-DO is a leading third-generation wireless standard that provides broadband connectivity to over 21 million phones and personal computers around the globe. 1xEV-DO is the most widely deployed mobile broadband technology in the United States, with coverage in over 180 metropolitan areas. Consumers in the United States can chose from over 30 devices, including phones, handsets, PC cards, and laptops with embedded EV-DO modems.

1xEV-DO Rev-A, the next step in the evolution of CDMA2000 provides the underlying technology to support new applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP), push-to-talk, push-to-multimedia, and video telephony. It increases the uplink speeds by 3-4x. Since UMTS will not support a faster uplink until HSUPA is available, Rev-A gives CDMA operators a 2+ year advantage over UMTS operators.

Airvana is now extending its expertise in building carrier-grade mobile broadband solutions and its IP-RAN network architecture to other air interfaces. Earlier this week, Airvana announced that it has joined the WiMAX forum and plans to build an Access Service Network (ASN) Gateway for Mobile WiMAX (802.16e) networks.

Airvana is located at booth #1054.
