GE Introduces Silblock WSR Masonry Water Repellent, Single-Product Innovation for Protecting Construction Materials

Offers Formulations and Application Flexibility for Customers, Minimizes Release of VOCs

WILTON, Conn., Oct. 26, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- GE - Advanced Materials, Silicones today announced the introduction of Silblock (see Note) WSR masonry water repellent, an innovative silicone-based emulsion that combines water resistance and oil resistance properties in a single additive for formulated coatings that will be used to treat masonry construction materials.

By offering good penetration on highly alkaline building materials, Silblock WSR masonry water repellent can deliver advanced water and oil protection in numerous applications, including concrete, building restorations, bridge decking, patios and sidewalks, roofing tiles and interior counter tops. The material helps to reduce efflorescence and to improve freeze thaw resistance.

Silblock WSR masonry water repellent is a water-borne material that complements our solvent-based Silblock SO product. This combined offering gives customers the flexibility to choose the formulation that best addresses their product requirements from both a performance and environmental aspect.

"With Silblock WSR masonry water repellent, we have combined oleophobic and hydrophobic behaviors in a single product, resulting in outstanding stain resistance and reduction of capillary water absorption," said Martin Wusik, global marketing manager, GE Advanced Materials. "By offering a single solution for a wide range of coating applications, we are helping customers deliver higher performing products that are easier to manufacture and market."

Silblock WSR masonry water repellent effectively penetrates a number of building materials, including fresh concrete, plaster, calcium silicate brick, fibrous cement and expanded concrete, to deliver the water and stain resistance that today's applications are demanding. In addition, it has excellent water vapor permeability, which allows surfaces to "breathe."
