Synchro Simulates Best Design for Global Competition to Build London Live

Synchro Software Simulates Winning Design for Hypothetical Large-Scale Construction Project in London

COVENTRY, England, July 16, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- "Team One," powered by construction simulation software from Synchro Ltd, a technology software provider headquartered in the UK, among other BIM software tools recently achieved the Best Design Award at the Build London Live Competition, which spanned 48 hours globally.

The competition challenged teams from design and construction firms, architects, technology modelers and universities worldwide to collaborate using 4D simulation software, to present large-scale construction models at a "virtual site" located on the Greenwich peninsula of London, England. The design challenge issued by Build London Live was for a completely hypothetical mixed-use redevelopment of an existing wharf site. However, in order to make the challenge realistic, the organizers declared that the existing adjacent master plans, and that local and government development policies be adhered to.

The teams were asked to create their designs in 3D models, with the same base data being used to generate computer-simulated 4D models for the Greenwich land tract with their ideas for building simulations. During a continuous 48-hour period, more than 300 individuals worked together in teams to produce detailed construction designs that were submitted for judging.

"I still don't know how you managed it all," said Paul Goodman-Simpson, Managing Director of CAD Visual UK Ltd. -- one of the organizers and manager of the winning design team -- to his team members after the competition. "The only trouble is that nobody will believe that this was done in two days!"

"By participating in this event, Synchro demonstrated the many possibilities awaiting the construction industry for truly useful construction application technologies from the earliest conceptual moments of a project though facilities management," said Tom Dengenis, CEO of Synchro Ltd.

"Once Team One had outlined the project's master plan and with only 12 hours to go, Synchro was put into action," said Stephan Jones of Synchro. "The models popped out of the CAD tools and were imported into Synchro where the construction was programmed and site logistics added. By 10:00 a.m. on the morning of the judging, a project animated video (AVI) was produced from Synchro Professional and added to the sum of information created during what was a very exciting event," he continued.

"From a personal point of view, it was staggering to see how much could be accomplished in such a short space of time," said Steven Williams of Synchro. "It was impressive to see how well everyone accommodated each others' requirements from the models, despite being so busy, not too mention how calm everyone was working through the night," he added.

Build London Live was held in conjunction with buildingSMART, an alliance of organizations within the construction and facilities management industries dedicated to improving processes within the industry through defining the use and sharing of information. Organizations within the alliance include architects, engineers, contractors, building owners, facility managers, manufacturers, software vendors, information providers, government agencies, research laboratories and universities.
