"Spirit of Rett" Sets Land Speed Record

Charles Nearburg's Red Line Oil-Sponsored Streamliner Shatters A/FS record at Bonneville Salt Flats, Running 394mph at 63rd Annual SpeedWeek

BENICIA, Calif., Aug. 25, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Less than a year after Charles Nearburg made history in the Red Line Oil-equipped "Spirit of Rett" streamliner by breaking a 45-year-old land-speed record and setting the fastest single-engine car record in history at 414.5 mph, the Dallas-based racer and businessman has done it again – breaking two of his own records at the 2011 Bonneville SpeedWeek on the famous salt flats in Western Utah.

Over the course of SpeedWeek – which ran from August 13-19 – the Spirit of Rett team broke two of its own records. The first, A/GS for gasoline-fueled, naturally-aspirated streamliners with less than 500 cubic-inches, was set at 352.8mph. The second record, A/FS with the same engine running with nitrous – putting it in the "fuel" class – was set at 379.6mph. Nearburg's top speed at the event was a blistering 394mph.

"Spirit of Rett" can now lay claim to the title of world's fastest gasoline powered car, world's fastest normally aspirated car, fastest single engine car in history, the four fastest unblown records at Bonneville and two fastest unblown records sanctioned by the SCTA.

The car is powered by a Reher-Morrison Chevrolet engine similar to what is run in a Pro Stock drag car. The engine, transmission and differential all use Red Line lubricants to ensure maximum durability at extreme speeds in one of the harshest environments on earth.

"We're extremely proud of Charlie and the entire Spirit of Rett team," said Red Line president Tim Kerrigan. "This car has entered the history books and is becoming a legend – one of the fastest to ever race on the salt. We're looking forward to seeing this fall just how fast they can take it with a single normally aspirated motor. Their success at SpeedWeek 2011 was just phenomenal."

Named after Charlie's son Rett, who died in 2005 after battling cancer, the "Spirit of Rett" effort was created in his memory (more information is available at rett.org).
