Foundation Center Welcomes Two New Trustees

Patrick McCarthy and John Colborn Will Join Board at November Meeting

NEW YORK, Sept. 21, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Foundation Center, the leading source of information about philanthropy worldwide, elected Patrick McCarthy and John Colborn to its Board of Trustees. Mr. McCarthy is president and CEO of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Mr. Colborn is vice president, operations, at the Ford Foundation. Their service on the Center's Board will begin in November 2011.

"Patrick and John are forward-thinking grantmakers who have woven information management into the fabric of their organization's work," said Bradford K. Smith, president of the Foundation Center. "We welcome their leadership and expertise in guiding the Foundation Center's work to employ data-driven knowledge in the service of strengthening the social sector."

Patrick McCarthy has more than 26 years of experience in the field of children's well-being. He joined the Annie E. Casey Foundation in 1994 and was its senior vice president prior to becoming president in 2010. The Casey Foundation, located in Baltimore, is a private foundation dedicated to helping build better futures for disadvantaged children in the United States. At Casey, McCarthy has championed the collection and dissemination of data — through initiatives like the annual KIDS COUNT Data Book — as an essential tool for policymakers and nonprofits working for positive change.

Before joining the Casey Foundation, McCarthy held positions of increasing responsibility at the Department of Services for Children, Youth, and their Families, State of Delaware, culminating in his appointment as director of the Division of Youth Rehabilitative Services. He has also taught child and family practice, research methods, and statistics at the graduate schools of social work of Bryn Mawr College and the University of Southern California. McCarthy holds a Ph.D. from the Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research and a B.A. in psychology from Manhattan College in New York City, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

As vice president, operations, at the Ford Foundation, John Colborn is responsible for overseeing grants administration, information technology, and operations for both New York City headquarters and overseas offices spanning Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. He joined Ford in 1998 as a program officer for workforce development and deputy director of the economic development program. He became director of operations in 2006 and vice president in 2010. The Ford Foundation is the second largest private foundation in the U.S., supporting visionary leaders and organizations on the frontlines of social change worldwide. Prior to joining the Ford Foundation, Colborn worked for over 12 years at a variety of nonprofit organizations, most recently, the Reinvestment Fund, a community development financial institution in Philadelphia. Colborn holds Bachelors degrees in government and economics from Oberlin College and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business.
