Nikon Instruments Inc. Introduces the Next Step in the Evolution of Upright Research Microscopes With New ECLIPSE Ni Series

Advanced Systems Offer Limitless Flexibility With Unsurpassed Image Quality for Biological and Medical Research

MELVILLE, N.Y., Nov. 15, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nikon Instruments Inc., an innovator of advanced optical instruments, today announced the next step in the evolution of the upright biological microscope with the release of the new Eclipse Ni series. Using the modular application enabling system expandability of Nikon's prominent Eclipse Ti inverted research microscope as a model, the Ni series will meet the current and future imaging needs of bioscience and medical research in a single platform while providing superior optical performance and automated observation.

Completely redesigned to replace the Eclipse 80i and 90i, the Ni series' enhanced features include a newly developed laser illumination unit that supports applications for full field variable oblique laser illumination, in addition to spot and ROI stimulation, a first for upright microscopes. This will enable applications such as FRAP, Photoactivation, Photoconversion, and Opto-genetics.

The highly versatile series consists of the Eclipse Ni-E flagship model, available with focusing nosepiece or focusing stage options, and the manual Eclipse Ni-U with motorization upgrade capability. A wide range of imaging possibilities are achievable with Nikon's acclaimed proprietary expandable stratum structure and can be upgraded at any time. Eclipse Ni-E is an ideal system for advanced imaging systems, such as confocal or multiphoton, which often utilize the option of fixed-stage configurations to meet the demands of experiments such as in-vitro brain slice preparations or in vivo imaging for cardio vascular and neuroscience research applications.

"For biological and medical researchers, this re-designed microscope will improve the user experience, while also providing the critical performance specifications needed to support their high-end experiments," said Stephen Ross, Ph.D., General Manager of Product and Marketing at Nikon Instruments Inc. "The flexibility of this system, coupled with its optics and motorization, truly make it a best-in-class system for these elite scientists."

Unsurpassed optical performance

Superior optical performance is ensured through Nikon's new CFI Plan Apochromat Lambda series objectives with Nano Crystal Coat technology. The series features improved transmission and chromatic aberration correction through the range of visible to near IR wavelengths (950nm). This enhancement produces bright, high-contrast, high signal-to-noise ratio and multi-color fluorescence images with no perceivable focus shift when used with any wavelength. In addition, simple one-touch control buttons to the side of the microscope combine with improved ergonomic design to provide users with speed, ease of access and comfort for motorized focusing.

Flexibility to meet all research requirements

A comprehensive range of high-speed, motorized accessories, specifically configured according to application, are available with improved features to meet all research requirements. Higher speeds of the motorized excitation and barrier filter wheel and motorized shutter enable fast wavelength changes, reducing photobleaching of the specimen. Applications that require highly accurate stage positioning, such as 3D image capture or large image stitching will benefit from a new motorized stage option. Intelligently located electrical connections on each unit also minimize the number of connection cables for seamless and tidy integration.

The new Eclipse Ni microscopes use the latest version 4.0 release of NIS-Elements software enabling microscope, camera and confocal control that removes the need for a laboratory to rely on separate software. Image acquisition and analysis is improved with over 100 new functions.

The ECLIPSE Ni series will be introduced in the United States at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in Washington DC, November 13-16 and available end of November. For more information, please visit www.nikoninstruments.com and https://www.facebook.com/nikoninstrumentsinc.
