American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Honors Contributions to Dental Education


ORLANDO, Fla., March 19, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) will recognize the contributions of many dental educators, researchers, and students at the 2012 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in Orlando, Fla., March 17-21. A complete listing of all awards follows.

Dr. Lonnie H. Norris, Dean Emeritus and Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Emeritus, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, is the recipient of the ADEA Distinguished Service Award. Given by the ADEA Board of Directors, this award recognizes significant contributions to education, research, and ADEA.

ADEA President Dr. Leo E. Rouse will honor seven leaders with Presidential Citations for their service to ADEA. They are:

  • Dr. L. Jackson Brown, Editor, Journal of Dental Education
  • Dr. W. David Brunson, Associate Director, Center for Equity and Diversity, ADEA
  • Mr. Robert S. Johns, Executive Director, National Dental Association
  • Dr. Linda C. Niessen, Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, DENTSPLY International, Inc.
  • Dr. Kathleen T. O'Loughlin, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, American Dental Association
  • Dr. Cecile E. Skinner, Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Howard University College of Dentistry
  • Dr. Marilyn W. Woolfolk, Assistant Dean for Student Services, University of Michigan School of Dentistry
  • The ADEA/American Association of Endodontists Foundation Scholar in the ADEA Leadership Institute will be presented to Dr. Marc Levitan from the Medical University of South Carolina James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine.

ADEA, in association with the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity, will name Dr. Mary Truhlar the recipient of the ADEA/Alpha Omega Foundation/Leonard Abrams Scholar in the ADEA Leadership Institute. Dr. Truhlar is with Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine.

The ADEA/International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations Orna Shanley Prize will be presented to the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry.

The ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Co./National Dental Association Jeanne C. Sinkford Scholar in the ADEA Leadership Institute will be presented to Dr. Terri J. Matthews from Howard University College of Dentistry.

The ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Co. Excellence in Teaching Award will be given to Dr. Ranier M. Adarve from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.

The ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Co. Allied Dental Educator Fellowship will be awarded to Prof. Donna P. Warren-Morris from The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston.

The ADEA/Crest Oral-B Scholarship for Predoctoral Students Pursuing Academic Careers will be given to Kayleigh A. Eaves from Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and Angela Gullard from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry.

The ADEA/William J. Gies Foundation Education Fellowship will be awarded to Dr. Lavern J. Holyfield from Baylor College of Dentistry.

The ADEA/William J. Gies Foundation Dental Research Scholarship will be given to the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry.

The ADEA/ADEA Council of Students, Residents, and Fellows/Colgate-Palmolive Co. Junior Faculty Award will be presented to Dr. Sophia Saeed from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry.
The Olav Alvares Awards for Outstanding Articles Published in the Journal of Dental Education will be presented to:

  • Dr. James Han, Mayo Clinic
  • Prof. Michelle R. Mould, Chattanooga State Community College
  • Prof. Jonathan B. Owens, Howard University College of Dentistry
  • Dr. Cheryl L. Straub-Morarend, University of Iowa College of Dentistry

The ADEA/Crest Oral-B Scholarship for Dental Hygiene Students Pursuing Academic Careers will be given to Qun Tange from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry and Catherine R. Beebe from the Idaho State University Department of Dental Hygiene.

The ADEA/Sigma Phi Alpha Linda DeVore Scholarship will be given to Kendra A. Kleppe of Old Dominion University College of Health Sciences.

The ADEA Thomas F. Nowlin Award for Best Performance by a Section will be presented to the ADEA Section on Anatomical Sciences.

The ADEA/Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Preventive Dentistry Scholarships will be given to the following predoctoral students:

  • Benjamin Cope, Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine
  • Leslie-Anne D. Fitzpatrick, University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine
