Alameda County Medical Center Hires Executive Director of System Transformation

Veteran Healthcare Administration Executive Varsha Chauhan, MD, MHA, to Oversee Critical Initiatives for Performance Improvement, Patient Experience, Electronic Health Records and Cost Reduction


OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 21, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Alameda County Medical Center (ACMC www.acmedctr.org), a leading public health care provider, announced it has hired Varsha Chauhan, MD, MHA, as executive director of ACMCs System Transformation Center.

In this newly created position, Dr. Chauhan will report to ACMC Chief Executive Officer Wright L. Lassiter III. She is responsible for oversight of the Medical Center's efforts to ensure that ACMC successfully implements its Centers for Medicare and Medicaid incentive payment program, which is tied to the Federal Delivery System Reform Incentive Pool (DSRIP), a national incentive program designed to rapidly increase care and service quality at public hospitals.

Specifically, Dr. Chauhan will be responsible for ACMC's LEAN initiative, patient experience enhancement, clinical integration and other system-wide initiatives.

Prior to joining ACMC, Dr. Chauhan was chief operating officer for Tri-City Health Center in Fremont, California where she was responsible for working in collaboration with the chief executive officer to manage daily business and clinical operations. In addition, she served as the Project Director of the organization's Electronic Health Records and Enterprise Practice Management initiatives.

"Dr. Chauhan has practiced medicine in India, the United Kingdom and the United States and has spent the last decade working in the safety net in various leadership capacities focused on driving quality enhancements, operational improvements and electronic health record implementation," notes Wright Lassiter. Previous to her work at Tri-City Health Center, Dr. Chauhan was clinic administrator at the St. Anthony Foundation Free Clinic in San Francisco and before that she was an administrator in the Health Information Management Department at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, California. She also served for five years as a General Medicine Physician and manager at Punarjeevan Hospital, a private institution in Jodhpur, India, where she provided a full range of outpatient, inpatient and emergency services to patients.

Dr. Chauhan holds a Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration from California State University, Hayward and a Doctor of Medicine Degree from University of Health Sciences, Mangalore, India. She is fluent in Spanish, German, Hindi, Punjabi and Gujarati.
