RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Ohio, March 3, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- February was touted as "Pet Dental Health Month" at Richman Animal Clinic. Richmond Heights veterinarian Dr. Jeffery A. Richman has used the month to draw attention to the importance of proper veterinary oral health care and is extending National Dental Month through March. According to Dr. Richman, the majority of pets aged four or older have a condition in which bacteria attack the soft gum tissue. Dr. Richman says oral health is an important part of veterinary care for all pets, starting with puppy and kitten care and continuing to senior pet care. A combination of regular at-home tooth brushing and professional cleanings is the best way to prevent the buildup of tartar along a pet's gum line. This reduces the risk for gum disease, tooth loss, bacterial infections and other health problems.
Richman Animal Clinic in Richmond Heights, OH has been raising awareness about the dangers of oral health problems in pets all through February and will continue to do so through March.
More than 85% of dogs and cats at least four years or older have periodontal disease, a serious oral health problem associated with bacterial infections in the gums. According to Richmond Heights veterinarian Dr. Jeffery A. Richman, few pet owners realize that their pets are affected by periodontal disease until serious damage occurs to the gums and teeth.
"Periodontal disease can be prevented and treated," said Dr. Richman. "Professional dental care and at-home teeth brushing are the two keys to a pet's good oral health. Unfortunately, very few pets receive both, and many do not receive either. Our animal hospital has been working to change this."
Warning signs of periodontal disease include bad breath, loose teeth or tooth loss, gingivitis (redness or inflammation of the gums), drooling, bleeding gums, and lack of appetite. Bacteria from the teeth and gums can enter the bloodstream. These bacteria can travel to major organs – including the heart, lungs, kidneys and liver – and start an infection. The nervous system can also be affected.
"These infections can do serious damage to the internal organs," said Dr. Richman. "In some cases, death may even result. Starting with puppy and kitten care, at-home brushing and professional dental cleanings at an animal clinic should be part of every pet's life."
Dr. Richman and the veterinary care team at Richman Animal Clinic are showing pet owners the right techniques for at-home brushing. These demonstrations are included in any pet wellness check-up and pet dental health exam.
