In 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt named March as Red Cross Month. More than 70 years later, the Red Cross is honored to have President Obama proclaim the same milestone month of activities just as his predecessors did. The Red Cross provides more than 40 percent of the nation's blood supply while providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities to those in need around the world. The organization trains more than seven million people in first aid, water safety and other life-saving skills.

Locally-owned Paul Davis offices nationwide provide Red Cross chapters with personal hygiene items and clothing, plus volunteer time and funding along with professional expertise and emergency preparedness planning before, during and after catastrophes.

In support of this year's Red Cross Month, Paul Davis offers the following tips for an Emergency Ready Kit. Water, food, and clean air are important things to have if an emergency happens. Each family or individual's kit should be customized to meet specific needs and to include important items. For example:

  • First aid kit - sterile gloves; adhesive bandages; antibiotic ointment; iodine/alcohol pads; pain reliever; emergency Mylar blanket; thermometer; prescription medications, and prescribed medical supplies.
  • Water - One gallon per person per day for at least three days.
  • Food - Three-day supply of non-perishable food and can opener.
  • Clothing - A change of clothing and sleeping bag per person.
  • Tent – Fire and water resistant materials for ground cover, shelter.
  • Compass – For use in rural communities and displacement.
  • Duct tape, heavy weight garbage bags, plastic sheeting, filter masks.
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio, a NOAA Weather Radio, flash light, extra batteries.
  • Cell Phone and charger.
