Appalachian Electric Cooperative Deploys Exalt Systems for Critical Network Backhaul

Systems Transport SCADA, AMI, and Two-Way Radio Traffic Where Fiber Is Unavailable

CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwired - Jun 4, 2014) - Exalt Communications, Inc., the leading innovator of next-generation wireless connectivity systems for private networks and Internet infrastructures, today announced that Appalachian Electric Cooperative of New Market, TN has deployed Exalt microwave systems to backhaul critical SCADA, Advanced Metering infrastructure (AMI) systems, and two-way radio traffic in portions of its network where fiber connectivity is unavailable.

Located 30 minutes east of Knoxville, Appalachian Electric Cooperative delivers electric power to 45,000 customers in rural Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, and Sevier counties. A membership cooperative, the company operates 13 substations in its service area and needs to carry network operations (SCADA and AMI) and two-way radio traffic among them. The Exalt systems replaced legacy microwave products on the network's links, providing superior performance, reliability, and serviceability.

"We were looking for systems that were a drop-in replacement for our old microwave systems, and we wanted them from a company that offers outstanding service and support," said Jim Greer, director of operations at Appalachian Electric Cooperative. "The Exalt systems give us outstanding performance and serviceability with combined native T1 and Ethernet transport, and the company's customer support is second-to-none."

The Exalt all-indoor microwave systems deliver native T1 circuits for the SCADA and two-way radio traffic, and 100 megabits per-second of Ethernet throughput for the AMI traffic. Microwave link distances range up to 20 miles.

"Because fiber is often cost-prohibitive or simply not available, using microwave is the most economic and practical option when expanding a network over rural areas," said Amir Zoufonoun, CEO of Exalt. "To optimize the delivery of energy services, easily add bandwidth to support new applications, enable workers to communicate, and control operating expenses, Exalt microwave backhaul systems are the ideal solution for utility cooperatives like Appalachian Electric."
