According to Gartner Inc., Information Governance is defined as "a decision rights and accountability framework to ensure appropriate behavior in the valuation, creation, storage, use, archiving and deletion of data." Electronic Discovery or 'eDiscovery' is the extension of discovery to include data in electronic format, commonly referred to as Electronically Stored Information or 'ESI'. The increasing amount of litigation, regulatory investigations, growing concern over data security breaches and increased use of social media and mobile sources as a method of communication makes it paramount for businesses to establish a strong Information Governance and eDiscovery plan.

Each event opened up with a general discussion on Information Governance. A recurring theme addressed was the need to improve inter-departmental communication through social media and other outlets and how new risks and challenges should be properly be mitigated. Other key topics focused on the creation of effective Information Governance policies and processes, followed by information on technology solutions that support a comprehensive data management program.

The conversations around eDiscovery were tackled head-on, starting with an introduction in the context of today's Big Data age. From there, applicable eDiscovery laws were explored through a discussion of five central themes, seen in the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) and the proposed FRCP changes. The duty to preserve digital data was examined to determine when companies need to start preserving data; and conversely, when they may resume normal retention policies. Relevant state and local rules were presented with valuable insights and tips. The eDiscovery portion concluded with 'boots on the ground' best practices across the entire eDiscovery lifecycle from identification, preservation and legal hold to production, following the well recognized and respected Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) framework. Attendees were able to take away lessons that could be utilized to improve their day-to-day and organizational resources.
