Islands Chiropractic Warns of Increased Risk for Summer Sports Injuries

GILBERT, Ariz., June 28, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Islands Chiropractic is raising awareness about the risk for increased sports injuries during the summer months. The practice is sharing tips for how individuals can safely stay active all summer long. Tennis elbow and runner's knee are especially common in the summer months, warns chiropractor Dr. Daniel Carlow. Repetitive motions can strain the tendons in the elbow, causing inflammation and chronic pain. High-impact sports such as long distance running or training for an upcoming race, such as a half marathon, can trigger inflammation and swelling. Chiropractic care can help the body heal faster after injury and support the recovery process.

An increase in outdoor activities during the summer months is correlated with an increased risk for sports injuries, says Dr. Daniel Carlow. The chiropractor is warning individuals to take the necessary precautions to be safely active and reduce the risk for injury.

"A casual tennis game or 18 holes of golf can go from relaxing and enjoyable to stressful should an injury occur," says Dr. Daniel Carlow. "While it's not possible to prevent every athletic injury, taking precautionary steps can help reduce the risk for injury. For example, injuries like tennis elbow or golf elbow are associated with repetitive motions that strain the tendons and cause inflammation and chronic pain. As a chiropractor, I work with patients to reduce the likelihood for these injuries by correcting improper movements and keeping the joints properly aligned."

In addition to treating injuries such as tennis elbow or golf elbow, Dr. Carlow also treats patients for runner's knee. This high-impact sports injury occurs when nerves and connective tissues in the knee are damaged. Dr. Carlow says that this injury is commonly associated with over-training.

"You do not have to be a marathoner to suffer from runner's knee or another repetitive motion injury," says Dr. Carlow. "High-impact sports and long distance running can trigger runner's knee pain. Training for a 5K or even going on a short-distance run every weekend can aggravate an underlying injury."

Physiotherapy treatments can help reduce internal inflammation associated with runner's knee. Dr. Carlow also recommends corrective care exercises to strengthen the surrounding tissues.

"Proper warm-up and cool-down exercises can reduce the risk of future problems," says Dr. Carlow. "Our goal with chiropractic care and physiotherapy is to ease pain, reduce inflammation and restore mobility to the body. I strive to help patients heal as quickly and safely as possible following an injury so they can return to living an active life."

As a chiropractor, Dr. Carlow is trained in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, including sports injuries. In addition to treating sports injuries at Islands Chiropractic, Dr. Carlow also provides comprehensive pain management and injury rehabilitation for car accident injuries, personal injuries and workplace injuries.
