Former Colombian Data Protection Superintendent (DPA) and Latin American Legal Expert Joins Nymity

Nymity announces the appointment of Jose Alejandro Bermudez as Managing Director, Latin America

TORONTO, Aug. 3, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nymity, the leading global research company specializing in accountability, risk, and compliance solutions for the privacy office, is honoured to welcome José Alejandro Bermúdez as Managing Director, Latin America, to lead Nymity's newly created business unit in Latin America. As the former Colombian DPA and a Privacy and Data Protection lawyer, José Alejandro was instrumental in drafting the Colombian Data Protection Law in Colombia.

The inaugural Deputy Superintendent for the Protection of Personal Data in Colombia, José Alejandro charted the path for data protection in Latin America as a member of the Governmental commission appointed to draft the Colombian Data Protection Law (Law 1581 of 2012) and its secondary regulations. José Alejandro also helped to shape the data protection regulatory landscape in Latin America as the promoter of the Colombian Accountability Guidelines, published by the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC). While acting as Deputy Superintendent, José Alejandro was an observer of APEC's Privacy Subgroup and the OECD Working Party on Information Security and Privacy in the Digital Economy, a member of the Colombian OECD Accession Mission (privacy and digital economy), and served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Ibero-American Network of Data Protection (RIPD). Prior to his term in government, José Alejandro was a partner at a leading Colombian law firm.

Commenting on his new role, José Alejandro said, "Latin America's privacy and data protection has been evolving very rapidly in the last years and there are lot of expectations on how to create effective privacy programs that address these changes. I am very excited to join Nymity, learn from its excellent team, and help build a specially tailored offering that can assist companies in the region in adjusting efficiently to a changing regulatory landscape."

The new Nymity Latin American headquarters will be located in Bogotá, Colombia. Nymity's Latin American solutions will be available in Spanish later this year and are available today in English. Enquiries may be directed to latam@nymity.com.

Terry McQuay, President of Nymity Inc., commented, "I had the opportunity to work with José Alejandro when he was developing the Colombian Accountability Guidelines and I know that as Nymity's new Managing Director for Latin America, he and his team will be excellent to further support our customers in Latin America as well as our international customers operating in Latin America."

This announcement follows on the heels of Jorge Molet recently joining Nymity as Privacy Research Lawyer Latin America, deepening Nymity's commitment to helping privacy officers with the increasingly complex regulatory developments in Latin America.

Nymity supports privacy offices around the world through its research to further data privacy management and accountability best practices that ultimately help organizations demonstrate accountability and compliance. Nymity makes a wide variety of selected research available for free to support the global privacy community, including its newly announced series of free global privacy management workshops which are being delivered in Spanish within Latin America.
