DNV GL presents phase one results and hosts a phase two workshop for the Offshore Standardization Joint Industry Project

Focusing on how to advance the industry through offshore standardization leads to cost savings. DNV GL hosted a widely attended and interactive workshop that included representatives from US - based global operators, all major Korean shipyards, global engineering companies, and suppliers.

HOUSTON, Nov. 18, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In the beginning of 2015, a team lead by DNV GL initiated a Joint Industry Project (JIP) that was executed and kicked-off in Korea. This JIP includes participants from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Company (DSME), Korea Offshore and Shipbuilding Association, and the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute.

Starting from the constructability viewpoint, this JIP represents a new approach to standardization. DNV GL's JIP develops common, globally accepted, best practices for components and equipment, and thereby reduces the number of required variations to the minimum necessary.

Peter Bjerager, Director of Division Americas Oil and Gas welcomed the group and explained that what differentiates this JIP is, "the willingness from all parties to find new areas of cooperation. It's critically important that we seek to harmonize guidelines and to help customers drive down costs without compromising on quality and safety." Phase one successfully focused on simple components and equipment; phase two will extend the scope to complete modules and equipment packages, documentation requirements, and procedures.

One participant acknowledged the success of DNV GL's JIP by saying, "Congratulations on the work you've accomplished. I came here today not knowing what to expect and I see now that a great deal of work has been done."

Today's workshop informed the participants about the progress in the JIP and allowed them to provide input on the work ahead. This helps determine importance within the scope of work and to ensure the JIP is truly a global standardization effort in the oil and gas industry. Moving forward, DNV GL will now expand the scope and welcome additional global participants including other shipyards from around the world.
