Craig McConnon sets Icelandic vibes for Club Glacier

The Craig McConnon Group reports great progress on new venue in Luton

The Craig McConnon Group reports that all is going according to plan with the development of Club Glacier in Luton. “We did Peterborough, we did Northampton and we're going to do Luton, that's for sure,” Craig McConnon said earlier this week. “We have our specialists on board and the architects have submitted their drafts.”

Craig McConnon is reportedly pleased with the latest architectural drafts but true to style has asked for some tweaks to the overall design as well as some elements that will require crafty building manoeuvres. “Overall it's looking great,” says Craig McConnon. “The guys have done great on the brief but talking it through I wanted to make a few changes.” One of the changes agreed on by the Craig McConnon Group was to raise the ceiling in the central chamber of the glacier-like club. “I like the tunnels but I also want a really great opened up dance space,” says Craig McConnon. “So that was one of the things I've asked for.”

The Craig McConnon Group has said the building will be based on a steel reinforced concrete structure overlaid with fibreglass mouldings with intumescent coating as a fire retardant. “What's tough about this design is, because it's unusual and needs to accommodate quite a number of people, it's got to be fire safe and that's a challenge engineers are working on,” said a company spokesman. “We've said we're managing every possible risk and safety is first, so we're working as a team on this design with the engineers and health and safety consultants in from the get go.”

Craig McConnon is in the meantime prepping the line-up for the new venue. “I've looked at the books and I'm pencilling in some booked gigs, but for sure we'll have a launch for the public,” he says. “I'm making moves on the genres and effects and looking deep for Icelandic vibes.” Electronic and Experimental soundscapes are ripe for the picking in Iceland right now and Craig McConnon and fellow DJs are digging for gems to add to the waves. On the Electronic front, GugGus is big on the list and so is Sónar but Experimental groups Múm, Hjaltalín and trio Samaris are also getting a look in. The Craig McConnon Group is planning an investigative trip to Selfoss and Seyðisfjörður to check out the scene on what's new in Icelandic beats.

The Craig McConnon Group has reiterated that the venue will be an exclusive one with limited spaces available. “It's not going to be open all the time and we're going to strike a balance between demand and exclusivity,” said a company spokesman. “We want to keep the original inspiration for Club Glacier alive and also maintain the atmosphere of mystery and a real high-end experience you won't get anywhere else.”

Craig McConnon is said to be sparing no expense in developing the venue, said to be costing in the region of half a million to a million Pounds to develop. The major cost is in the building specifications but a significant contributor is the sound and lighting equipment that is being ordered in, much of which is being custom made to specifications. “Getting pieces machined especially is not cheap, but we do expect to get a great return on our investment,” says a company spokesman. “We're looking at big numbers in terms of cost but we're also looking at positive gains over time. It's also not just about getting numbers in but about building the brand and Craig's reputation as really cutting edge in not only music and lights but venue design and management.”

The Craig McConnon Group set ambitious targets for expansion earlier this year and they certainly are delivering so far. “We're pleased with what we've managed to achieve,” says Craig McConnon. “When we set our targets, we said yeah they're ambitious but this year we're going all out. So what we're doing now is consolidating on the first two quarters and reworking what we expect from Q3 and Q4.” The political and economic uncertainty in the UK at the current time does not seem to be dampening Craig McConnon's enthusiasm or the demand for his services as he is reportedly booked for six to nine months ahead. “So what I'm looking at now is keeping strong and keeping going,” says Craig McConnon. “I've got my eye on the ball and I'm really on form and loving every moment. I super stoked about the progress on Club Glacier and really looking forward to the launch, but it's in capable hands so I get on with making my clients happy with super sonic events.”
