Alberta’s Newest Financial Institution Launches to Focus on the Energy Industry

On International Credit Union Day, Spark The Energy Credit Union, will be welcomed by the Alberta Minister of Finance at a brand launch event in Calgary

CALGARY, Alberta, Oct. 18, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Shell Employees’ Credit Union has rebranded to appeal to a broader energy market. On October 18, International Credit Union Day, Spark The Energy Credit Union launches with a pledge to provide members of the Alberta energy industry with the financial products, service, and understanding they deserve to help them thrive in good times and be resilient in challenging times.

“This is an exciting time for our Credit Union as we look to the future and open our bond to be able to share our benefits, values, and service with a broader audience, while at the same time honouring our relationship with our historical energy partners like Shell,” explains Board President, Adam Battistessa. “We knew as the Alberta energy landscape changed that we had to adopt a new mindset. Nearly 4-months ago we held a special meeting to gain member support for our transition. 96% of members voted in support of our new brand.”

International Credit Union Day celebrates the spirit of the global credit union movement. The day is recognized to reflect upon the credit union movement’s history, promote its achievements, recognize the hard work of staff and volunteers, and share member experiences. International Credit Union Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948; this year is the 70th anniversary.

“This historic day is a well-suited day for an event like this. Credit unions remain an important and valuable option for Albertans looking for a financial institution,” says Alberta Minister of Finance, the Honourable Joe Ceci. “I am thrilled to be part of an event that brings together Albertans. I am happy to know that Alberta’s energy workers will have another option for their banking needs.”

From this day forward Shell Employees’ Credit Union will be Spark The Energy Credit Union. While the new financial institution will offer new products, current members will see no interruption to the service they expect. Culture, communications, and brand awareness are the team’s immediate priorities.

“We are celebrating with a carnival themed party today open to all of our members. Just as a carnival brings a community together – Spark will bring together the men and women of the energy industry,” explains Badriea Taha, General Manager. “Spark The Energy Credit Union is open!”

Spark The Energy Credit Union exists to provide members of the Alberta energy industry with the financial products, service, and understanding they deserve to help them thrive in good times and be resilient in challenging times. Visit them online at www.sparkcu.ca.
