At a press conference today in Bolzano, senior representatives from the Italian Autonomous Province of Bolzano-Bozen, Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige (STA) and rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation celebrated the launch of the long-term sustainable mobility plan for Italy’s South Tyrol region. To help support this plan, Bombardier is providing seven BOMBARDIER TALENT 3 regional trains from a 2019 framework agreement, already in place with STA, for up to 32 new trains and up to 30 years of fleet maintenance services. The trains will operate across South Tyrol and provide cross-border services between Italy and Austria, making this another important step towards closer co-operation in the Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino Euroregion.

Daniel Alfreider, Vice President and Regional Minister of Mobility and Infrastructures for the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-Bozen, said, “The purchase of new trains is a very important step in our plan for long-term sustainable and high-quality alpine mobility for the entire European region Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino. For us, the transfer of passengers from road to rail is especially important for local public transport in the area, but also for the international connections on the Brenner corridor. New trains not only ensure increasingly efficient rail mobility, they are also important for providing a quality service for our citizens and our guests. The connection with the new trains from Venosta to Trento and Innsbruck and Lienz is concrete sign of international cooperation. Also, I am very happy with this new collaboration with Bombardier, which will be very fruitful.”

Martin Ausserdorfer, President of STA, added, “The new trains meet all the needs of future passengers. They have modern equipment, they are accessible for everyone, they have space for sports equipment, and they will operate with the power systems here and beyond the Brenner pass. This is another important step towards more attractive local public transport in South Tyrol.”

Marco Biffoni, Head of Sales Italy at Bombardier Transportation, responded, “As a full solution provider, Bombardier is looking forward to supporting the Autonomous Province of Bolzano-Bozen and STA in the realization of their long-term mobility plans.” He added, “Bombardier’s TALENT 3 regional trains, with their appealing design, high reliability and generous seating capacity, will provide a premium travel experience for passengers and tourists visiting South Tyrol.”

The new TALENT 3 trains will have a seating capacity of up to 300 seats per train as well as modern passenger information systems and air-conditioning. Comfort, safety and accessibility for all passengers is a priority for this rolling stock platform, with easy access and ample space allocated to wheelchair users, as well as designated areas for luggage, prams, bicycles and winter sports equipment. High reliability and rapid acceleration, with speeds up to 160 km/h, will help the operator to maintain cross-border schedules. The trains will also be equipped with three propulsion systems and three signaling systems, including the European Train Control System (ETCS).

This is the first time Bombardier will provide regional trains to Italy, widening Bombardier’s Italian solutions portfolio which already includes high-speed trains, trams, passenger and freight locomotives, airport people mover as well as signaling systems and service and maintenance solutions.
