ADEA President Presents Presidential Citations at 2013 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition


SEATTLE, March 17, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- American Dental Education Association (ADEA) President Gerald N. Glickman, D.D.S., M.S., M.B.A., J.D., awarded Presidential Citations to 13 leaders who have demonstrated exceptional service to the Association and dental education community. Awards were presented at the 2013 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition, being held March 16-19 in Seattle, Washington.

"Each of the 2013 ADEA Presidential Citation recipients has shown extraordinary dedication to dental education," says Dr. Glickman. "I am proud to honor them and to recognize the major contributions they have made to ADEA and to dental education."

2013 ADEA Presidential Citation recipients are:

Jack Bresch (Posthumously), Former ADEA Associate Executive Director and Director of the Center for Public Policy and Advocacy

Mr. Bresch was ADEA's chief governmental relations professional for more than 10 years. Serving as ADEA Associate Executive Director and as Director of the ADEA Center for Public Policy and Advocacy, he brought wisdom and foresight about the political landscape to ADEA and was steadfast in his efforts to ensure that policymakers understood the importance of dental education and dental craniofacial research.

Phyllis L. Beemsterboer, M.S., Ed.D., Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry

Dr. Beemsterboer has an extensive background in dental ethics and the professionalism of dentistry. Currently, she serves as the Chair of the Teaching Interprofessional Ethics Team at the Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry, and she was the President of the American Society of Dental Ethics. In 1999, she was the recipient of the ADEA/William J. Gies Foundation Education Fellowship.

Ronald W. Botto, Ph.D., Director for Interprofessional Education, University of Kentucky College of Dentistry

Dr. Botto is the current Chair of the ADEA Annual Session Program Committee, and was instrumental in enhancing the peer review process for education programing at the 2013 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition.

Alan W. Budenz, D.D.S., M.B.A., M.S., Professor and Director of Oral Diagnosis and Patient Intake, University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry

Dr. Budenz was a significant contributor to the ADEA Council of Sections task force which updated "Competencies for the New General Dentist," a resource for dental schools as they undergo curricular changes.

William O. "Bill" Butler, M.S., Director of the Office of Continuing Dental Education, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School

Mr. Butler strongly believes that continuing professional education is essential to successful dental practice and that the provision of continuing dental education is an essential part of dental schools' missions. He has been an innovative leader in continuing dental education and a source of encouragement to the dental education community.

Elise S. Eisenberg, D.D.S., M.A., Senior Director of Informatics and Clinical Professor of Epidemiology and Health Promotion, New York University College of Dentistry

Dr. Eisenberg is widely recognized as a technological innovator in dental education. She has contributed to ADEA's stature in this pursuit, and encourages her colleagues to adopt technology in clinical instruction and in presentations. In 2011, she was the recipient of the ADEA/William J. Gies Foundation Education Fellowship.

Cecile A. Feldman, D.M.D., M.B.A., Dean, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Dental School

Dr. Feldman is serving as Chair of the ADEA Council of Deans for 2012-2013. She also chaired the ADEA Presidential Task Force on the Cost of Higher Education and Student Borrowing, leading a study of great benefit to the dental education community.

Sheryl Lyn Kane, D.D.S., Dental Flight Commander, U.S. Air Force Dental Service

Lt. Col. Kane heads a 32-person clinic at Moody Air Force Base. She has been an active member of ADEA as a presenter and mentor, and is the Councilor of the ADEA Section on Postdoctoral General Dentistry. Lt. Col. Kane has been a role model for many, especially for new and younger members because she demonstrates volunteerism, energy and enthusiasm for all aspects of ADEA.

Michael A. Landers, D.D.S., M.A., Associate Professor of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology, Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine

Dr. Landers has maintained a family dental practice throughout his 37-year tenure at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. He has actively contributed to ADEA, and currently serves with distinction on the ADEA Board of Directors and the ADEA Annual Session Program Committee.

W.H. "Bert" Milligan, D.M.D., Ph.D., Director of Continuing Education, University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine

Dr. Milligan has led efforts to develop innovative programming about gender issues and the cost of dental education. He serves as Councilor of the ADEA Section of Business and Financial Administration.

Elizabeth Roberts, D.D.S., M.B.A., Director, Professional Affairs – Oral Healthcare, Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products, Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc.

Dr. Roberts is the Chair of the ADEA Corporate Council, serves on the ADEA MedEdPORTAL Advisory Committee, and was a member of the ADEA Task Force on the Development of General Guidelines for the Interaction between Academic Dental Institutions and the Dental Industry. She is both a dentist and a leader in business.

Robert D. Spears, Ph.D., M.S., Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences, Texas A &M University Baylor College of Dentistry

Dr. Spears is the Texas A &M University Baylor College of Dentistry's representative to the ADEA Council of Faculties, and is the Councils liaison for the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education. A role model for students and young faculty, he has been a strong advocate for student researchers.

Lynn Page Whittaker, M.A., Managing Editor, Journal of Dental Education

Ms. Whittaker is a publications expert and has offered her wise input and constant optimism to the Editor and the Editorial Review Board of the Journal.
