Augmented Reality Technology May Help Guide Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Plastic surgeons report the development and initial experience with an augmented reality (AR) system for evaluation of improvements of the body surface, is a key consideration in plastic surgery

Arlington Heights, IL, July 31, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has two articles that are published in the August issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), that may be of interest to the general public.

Augmented Reality Technology May Help Guide Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

A plastic surgery research group has developed an augmented reality system that enables them to create 3D simulations of the desired results of facial reconstructive procedures and project them over the patient’s face during surgery, reports a study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery—Global Open®, the official open-access medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

Koichi Ueda, MD, PhD, Daisuke Mitsuno, MD, and colleagues of Osaka Medical College, Japan, report the development and initial experience with an augmented reality (AR) system for evaluation of improvements of the body surface, is a key consideration in plastic surgery. Initial experience in eight cases suggests that augmented reality could be a useful guide to planning, performing and evaluating the results of facial reconstruction and other procedures.

For Infants with Skull Flattening, Earlier Helmet Therapy Gives Better Results

For infants with skull flattening related to sleep position, starting helmet therapy at a younger age, especially before 24 weeks, increases the treatment success rate, suggests a study in the August issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

"The present study shows that age at the start of treatment and positional plagiocephaly severity affect the duration and effectiveness of helmet therapy," according to the report by Felix Kunz, DMD, of University Hospital Würzburg, Germany, and colleagues. “These two factors are important predictors on the results of helmet therapy for position-related skull flattening.”

If you'd like to speak with Dr. Ueda or Dr. Kunz about the findings and what they suggest, please contact me at kkubiak@plasticsurgery.org or 847-981-5406. Thanks for your time and consideration.
