Steves & Sons Donates 8,800 Doors to Virginia Habitat for Humanity ReStores

150-Year-Old Family-Owned Firm Continues Long History of Philanthropic Involvement and Ongoing Partnership with Habitat for Humanity

Richmond, VA, Feb. 27, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Richmond, Va.—February 27, 2018. Steves & Sons Inc. today announced the company is donating 8,800 doors to Habitat for Humanity ReStores throughout the state of Virginia to support Habitat’s mission of ensuring every citizen has the dignity, stability, sense of community and hope that comes with owning a home.

“Philanthropy has always been a part of our company’s DNA,” said Gloria Steves Dilley, Vice President of Steves and Sons Inc. “Wherever we have a business presence, we try to focus on lifting up those in need, providing genuine caring and a human touch, along with whatever aid or assistance is needed. Our ongoing partnership with Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity affords us that opportunity.”

The Steves-donated doors encompasses five truckloads of interior and exterior doors of all sizes. The doors will be distributed among Habitat for Humanity ReStores in 21 Virginia cities. Habitat’s Restores are retail outlets selling new and gently used building and home improvement supplies to the general public at greatly reduced prices. Profits from the Virginia restores support Habitat’s mission of building affordable housing statewide.

“We are immensely grateful for this very generous donation,” said Overton McGehee of Habitat for Humanity Virginia. “It will enable us to help Virginia families break the cycle of poverty and build long-term financial security, leaving them with more money to spend on food, medicine, child care, education and other essentials.”

Steves & Sons is one of the oldest door manufacturing companies in the business, established by Edward Steves and his three sons over 150 years ago with the opening of a lumber business in San Antonio, Texas. Steves & Sons opened its original 62,000 square-foot Richmond manufacturing plant at 5325 Glen Alden Drive in 1983. In 2014, the company built a new Richmond plant, triple the size of the old one and with fully computerized “smart” operating systems. The plant’s opening spawned about 50 new good-paying jobs and will add more as production volume increases.

Patriotism and philanthropy are long-held core values for Steves & Sons, a sixth-generation family-owned and operated business. During World War I, the Steves family converted their millwork operations to manufacture propellers for the newly established Army Air Corps; during World War II, they again curtailed milling operations to make joinery for the U.S. Maritime Commission’s Liberty ships. After the war, the Steves family returned all profits to the U.S. government to help get the country restarted war and in gratitude for the safe return of the Steves sons, all of whom served with honor. After the war, the Steves family returned its attention to building quality products for homes, with an emphasis on doors.

“Steves & Sons has long been part of Richmond community and the broader Virginia community for 35 years,” said Dilley. “We have formed strong ties with the people here – our customers, our vendors and the folks at organizations like Habitat for Humanity, which does so much good in Richmond and throughout the state. Those relationships are truly our most valuable assets.”
