Nokia introduces the Advanced API for fast build-up of seamless Mobile Internet applications

Nokia today launched the Advanced Application Programming Interface (API) for its Nokia mPlatform Solution. The Advanced API is targeted to benefit operators, service providers and developers who want to be first to market by developing and offering value-added Mobile Services based on Nokia solutions.

The new Nokia API is based on open and common application development specifications, such as XML (Extended Mark-up Language) and SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol)

Nokia mPlatform Solution, introduced in early October this year, is a network and terminal independent solution for Mobile Internet services that work across various access methods from WAP and GRPS to 3G and fixed Internet technologies. It combines the key elements for offering new value-added messaging and information services for end-users, including access and enabling functions and the Advanced API for rapid application development and service offering. Nokia mPlatform Solution is targeted to operators and service providers who will receive the Advanced API as part of the mPlatform.

"An open application interface brings significant advantages for the whole value-chain; it enables the creation of seamless and appealing new services because applications are integrated to work together," said Niklas Savander, Vice President, Mobile Internet Applications, Nokia Networks, "Developers can create applications easily and conveniently with tools familiar to them, since the Advanced API is designed to hide the complexity of network environment. Open application interfaces will also allow the utilization of network assets, such as location, authentication and co-ordinated billing information."

Nokia is already cooperating with selected developers who are now creating applications with the Advanced API. In the near future, information about the Advanced API will be offered via the Nokia developer community. For adopters of the Advanced API Nokia will provide support, including specification documentation, a testing facility, application evaluation and acceptance reports, and communication channels.
