Nokia Payment Solution enables mobile e-commerce services with multiple payment methods and enhanced security

Nokia today announced a new solution for mobile e-commerce. With Nokia's Payment Solution operators and service providers can smoothly and easily expand their business into rapidly growing mobile e-commerce services. The Nokia Payment Solution is showcased at 3GSM World Congress at Cannes, France and will be available for markets during the third quarter, 2001.

Nokia's Payment Solution enables payment service providers to mediate payments between three main parties of mobile e-commerce: financial institutions, merchants and consumers. The new Nokia solution is a platform that collects, manages and clears payments initiated from mobile phones and other web-enabled terminals through various payment methods, such as credit and debit cards, operator's pre-paid or post-paid systems, and a virtual purse. The virtual purse is an integrated pre-paid account of Nokia's Payment Solution that can be used with specific applications, such as mobile games.

"Nokia Payment Solution combines the key elements needed for succesfull and profitable mobile e-commerce: applications, payment and security," said Heikki Heinaro, Director, Mobile Internet Applications, Nokia Networks, "Therefore it enables operators and service providers smoothly transfer into complete new business segment and become a consolidated channel, the trusted party, for all mobile payments. Nokia Payment Solution supports flexible and secure authentication of payers without sacrificing the user-friendliness of services. New applications and services, evolving towards 3G, can also be easily integrated with the solution. "

The Nokia Payment Solution will allows users of WAP and web-enabled terminals to initiate and control payments of digital content, services, and goods. The solution will enable not only remote payments from mobile terminals, but allows also local payments. Typical examples of local payment with mobile phones are vending machines or parking fees. Remote payments can consist anything from electronic bill payment and shopping to mobile games, ticketing, auctioning and music downloading. The user can choose the suitable payment method according to her/his individual needs and personalize also the preferred payment methods for micro- and macropayments.

In the initial phase Nokia Payment Solution is a network independent, server based solution supporting web access and WAP 1.1 and 1.2 specifications. The solution will evolve with the 3rd generation mobile e-commerce applications, such as session-based streaming. Nokia's Payment Solution will include the Merchant Tool Kit, which enables content providers and merchants to price digital content and physical goods sold in the mobile Internet.

For authentication and payment transaction non-repudiation by digital signatures Nokia Payment Solution includes Nokia Signet Server. The authentication and digital signatures between the client and server are fulfilled by using the Wireless PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) technology, an elementary part of WAP 1.2 specification. Nokia Payment Solution will support WAP 1.2 compatible phones which include Wireless Identity Module (WIM), the tamper resistant module for private key storage and crypto operations.
