National Safety Council Announces 2001 Awards for Improvement In the Quality of Life for People With Disabilities


ITASCA, Ill., May 11, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- The National Safety Council's Community Safety Division, Irwin Siegel Agency, Inc. and CNA are proud to announce the 2001 Award for the Improvement in the Quality of Life for People with Disabilities. In its eighth year, the award recognizes organizations for outstanding programs that prevent or alleviate disabling injuries to and/or improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.

"The National Safety Council is committed to supporting the efforts of companies, organizations and communities that make a difference in improving safety by implementing programs that improve the quality of life for people with disabilities," Alan McMillan, president of the National Safety Council, said today.

"There are 49 million Americans living with disability today," said John Rose, vice president of risk management for Irwin Siegel Agency, Inc. "We're pleased to work with the National Safety Council on this project to address the preventability of disabling injuries and to recognize organizations that excel in safety."

The purpose of the award is to: Encourage the development of valid safety advancements for people with disabilities; Disseminate valid safety advancements to the widest possible audience; Heighten the interest of professionals and technicians in other areas to increase occupational safety and reduce hazards for people with disabilities.

The following will be awarded:
 
     First place - $3,000
     Second place - $2,000
     Third place - $1,000

In addition, winners will receive plaques, a National Safety Council membership and an all expense paid trip to the NSC's Congress and Expo, in Atlanta Georgia this year, to attend the awards presentation on September 23, 2001. Two Honorable Mentions will also be named.

Award winners in 2000 included Mid-Valley Rehabilitation, Inc. of Amity, Oregon; Glove House, Inc. of Elmira, New York; and Genesee County Chapter NYSARC, Inc., Batavia, New York.

The National Safety Council is a not-for-profit, nongovernmental, international public service organization dedicated to protecting life and promoting health. The NSC estimates that 4.2 million lives have been saved through improved safety practices since the Council was established in 1913.

The Irwin Siegel Agency is a national program administrator insuring providers of services to individuals with disabilities in 48 states.
