IDC's Internet Security Appliance report reveals firewall/VPN appliance marketshare based on revenues and shipments claiming Nokia as a significant contributor gaining over 11% marketshare over the year 2000, demonstrating the fastest growth in the industry.
According to the most recent IDC report, "Nokia led the parade with more than 430% growth in the firewall/VPN security appliance market..." capturing over 22% of the total worldwide firewall/VPN appliance marketshare. Demonstrating consistently strong, competitive position, IDC expects "[Nokia] will remain one of the premier vendors in the security appliance market."
The appliance model has become the 'model of choice' for security implementations and continues to absorb marketshare from traditional alternatives. Appliance based security solutions continue to gain over traditional models for their ability to effectively relieve the complexities and required manpower involved in integration, installation and maintenance of multiple security components. The security appliance-based market grew by 150% in 2000 over 1999, and over 100% in 1999 compared to 1998. By 2000, the firewall/VPN security appliance market exploded with total revenue of nearly $1 billion (i.e., $942.8 million). By 2005, IDC anticipates that the firewall/VPN security appliance market will grow to $4.0 billion.
