Nokia to deliver Broadband DSL for Chunghwa Telecom's Multimedia on Demand solution in Taiwan

Nokia and Chunghwa Telecom, the leading provider of domestic and international communications services in Taiwan, have signed a contract for the supply of the Nokia access delivery platform. As the core of its broadband DSL streaming solution, it will enable Chunghwa's Multimedia on Demand (MoD) project.

Nokia will deliver the main access nodes to help take Chunghwa from plain fast Internet connectivity services to full-blown broadband streaming media services.

The Nokia solution will enable Chunghwa to provide a range of multimedia on demand services to consumers including some major service areas: Near Video on Demand, Live TV, True Video on Demand and Karaoke on demand, etc.

Consumers will benefit by being able to order videos through their TV sets to watch instantly (True Video on Demand) or to choose, for example, the movie they want to see at a scheduled time (Near Video on Demand) and they will be able to fast forward or rewind as they wish via their set-top box.

"Bringing multimedia on demand through broadband DSL to consumers is an important goal for us as it is a major leap forward in creating the environment for consumers to have the control of information and entertainment at their fingertips. This will allow the consumer to choose when and what they want to watch and to do via their TV or PC," comments Dr. John Hsueh, President of Chunghwa Telecom North Business Group.

"We are very pleased to be chosen by Chunghwa Telecom, as this is a milestone deal emphasising not only Nokia's commitment to the broadband space but also Nokia's ability to take service providers and carriers beyond the plain fast Internet business to the exciting broadband media business,' says Mark Slater, Vice President, Marketing and Sales, Nokia Broadband Systems.

"This is the first step in Nokia's aim to enable carriers to generate higher revenues over and above today's fast Internet access via future-proof solutions and platforms"; adds Mr Slater.
