Logicon Software Controls Successful National Missile Defense Booster Verification Test

HERNDON, Va., July 3, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- Logicon Inc., a Northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC) company, provided the ground command and control software for the successful verification test of The Boeing Company's National Missile Defense (NMD) booster at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

The test demonstrated the technology for Boeing's commercial-off-the-shelf booster, the ground support equipment and the Logicon-developed software that controls the booster. This ground test, called pathfinder, verified the technologies and processes prior to an actual launch later this year.

The NMD program is designed to protect the United States against attack by ICBM's from hostile countries. As the NMD prime contractor, Boeing selected Logicon's software to plan the intercept trajectory, command the booster and monitor its status. The software communicates with the booster during pre-launch checkout until the time it commands the booster to launch.

"The NMD program is a vital defense system essential to America's security," said Christine Reynolds, vice president, C3I Systems. "Logicon will continue to apply our advanced command and control technologies to meet NMD's challenging goals. We are pleased with the software's performance during the pathfinder test and our role on the Boeing NMD team."

In addition to the command and control development work, Logicon provides NMD systems engineering and simulation development support. This end-to-end system simulation is used to evaluate NMD performance under potential attack scenarios.

Work on the program is performed in Anaheim and San Pedro, Calif.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Crystal City, Va.; and Huntsville, Ala.
