ASFSA Launches Online Recipe Database

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 24, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- The American School Food Service Association (ASFSA) recently launched an online database of recipes, featuring family-sized and quantity-sized recipes from the USDA and from the pages of ASFSA's own School Foodservice and Nutrition magazine. The ASFSA Recipe Database is sponsored by School-Link Technologies, which provides foodservice automation and universal identification card hardware and software designed for the K-12 environment.

Located at http://www.asfsa.org/recipes/, the recipe database currently lists more than 100 recipes and allows users to submit recipes for inclusion in the database. In addition to the address above, the database also can be accessed by going to the ASFSA Website at http://www.asfsa.org and clicking on the yellow-tile "Recipes" link on the left side of the page.

Recipes submitted by database users will be reviewed by ASFSA's Nutrition and Education staff to ensure that they are appropriate for inclusion in the database. In addition, recipes will be added continually to the database to make it as useful a tool as possible for school foodservice professionals.

"Considering the amount of meals our members plan, prepare and serve over a school year, we all can use a database like this to turn to for new, creative ideas," said ASFSA President Marcia L. Smith, SFNS. "Hopefully, this tool will become a great example of the potential of interactive media, as our members both benefit from and add to this database."

Recipes included in the database feature nutritional analysis and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) tips and can be printed out on a printer-friendly page. Users can search the database by a recipe name, such as pizza, or by ingredient, such as oranges. Eventually, recipes also will be searchable by themes, such as holidays, or events like National School Lunch Week.

ASFSA (http://www.asfsa.org) is a national, non-profit professional organization representing more than 55,000 members who provide high-quality, low-cost meals to students across the country. Founded in 1946, ASFSA is the only association devoted exclusively to protecting and enhancing children's health and well-being through school meals and sound nutrition education.

"School-Link Technologies' (http://www.sl-tech.net) vision is to empower school administrators with systems that seamlessly link electronic access for cafeteria, library, transportation, and student systems. The company's major product categories include foodservice automation, a universal student identification card, and connectivity products providing Internet and telephone access to information and services."
