OTI (On Track Innovations): Biometric Smart-Card Border Control Implemented in Israel

FRANKFURT, Germany, Oct. 29, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- OTI (GER:OT5) today announced that the biometrics-based contactless smart card border-crossing system has moved into the initial implementation stage. The system authenticates an individual's identity by incorporating the use of state-of-the-art, contactless microprocessor-based smart cards and biometrics technologies to allow automatic, secure border passage through an integrated ID gate system.

"One of the most demanding organizations in the world - the Israeli MOD - has embraced our technology to secure one of the most sensitive and challenging security environments in the world," said Oded Bashan, President and CEO of OTI. "The solution will automate and significantly improve the border crossing process and security."

The Biometric Access Control System allows absolute personal identification of people during movement to and from classified locations. The system monitors the entrance and exit of around 120,000 daily workers to the Israeli territories while assuring a completely secure, exceptionally fast border crossing. Improved security and efficiency at the border is achieved through automatic inspection of passengers based upon innovative integrated biometric technologies of hand geometry and facial recognition. By comparing data collected on location in 4 - 9 seconds for total crossing time, through hand and facial identification with available card information, the system is able to approve or deny passage.

Card Applicants will be required to provide personal information and to undergo a process of facial and hand scanning. The system will instantly issue an access card complete with a photograph and personal data to allow physical and electronic identification at borders.

The Biometric Access Control System consortium includes EDS, OTI, Oberthur Smart Cards USA, Visionics Corporation, and Recognition Systems Inc.
