Samsung and Nokia Announce Licensing Agreement on Mobile Browser and Smart Messaging technology


Las Vegas, November 12th, 2001 - Nokia and Samsung today announced a licensing agreement whereby Samsung has licensed the source code for the Nokia Mobile Browser as well as an implementation of the Smart Messaging technology for use across a wide variety of Samsung mobile communications devices.

The Nokia Mobile Browser is a platform independent version of the browser technology designed for Nokia's mobile devices, which meet the requirements specific to OEM software. It is a dual mode browser with native support for both WML 1.3 and for XHTML and WAP CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). The product is based on specifications from the WAP Forum and from the W3C.

Smart Messaging is concept developed by Nokia that allows sending Internet access configuration messages, business cards, calendar reservations, ring tones, graphical logos, picture messages and downloadable profiles over the Short Message Service (SMS).

Nokia licenses its WAP browser source code to manufacturers, chipset vendors, service providers and operating system suppliers. Nokia will be demonstrating live implementations of the browser running on a standard Nokia handset during the Comdex exhibition in Las Vegas.
