Neoware Makes the Grade at National Semiconductor

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., Nov. 27, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- Neoware Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:NWRE), the leading supplier of award-winning software and solutions for the emerging Appliance Computing market, today announced that National Semiconductor Corporation has selected Neoware thin client appliances for their Greenock, Scotland facility.

National Semiconductor is driving the information age with their real-world analog and state-of-the-art digital technology. Founded in Danbury, CT in 1959, and then moving to Silicon Valley nine years later, National Semiconductor has introduced many new products throughout its history. Accomplishments include introducing the first linear amplifier, first all-IC calculator, TTL Logic, Geode SC 1400 prototype processor and the first 10/100/1000 megabit per second Ethernet transceiver. Today, they are focused on providing optimal system solutions for the wireless handsets, information appliances, information infrastructure, and display, imaging and human interface technologies. National's intellectual property, emerging technologies, and system expertise are leading the way in developing electronic products and devices.

National Semiconductor's Greenock, Scotland location needed a new computing architecture to integrate their existing operating systems, the Internet, email and Windows-based desktop applications. They were seeking to replace aging PC desktops and green-screen terminals, as well as install new devices on their production floor. After considering PCs, National investigated thin clients for their ease of administration, lower total cost of ownership, higher reliability, and the fact that they are significantly smaller than personal computers.

After testing thin client appliances from a number of manufacturers, National chose Neoware's Eon computing appliances because they offer simplified administration through Neoware's ezRemote Manager software, driving down total cost of ownership. Additionally, National chose Neoware's products for their overall quality and service, and for Neoware's ezConnect user interface, an intuitive graphical interface that allows Neoware devices to be easily customized and configured.

National Semiconductor is installing Neoware appliances to run locally and remotely, Internet Explorer 5.5, Netscape, Microsoft Office, Pericom TeemX, Lotus Notes, and to connect to UNIX servers via the X Window protocol. Neoware's products are integrated into National Semiconductor's current infrastructure of servers and PCs, and access remote server-based applications through Citrix Metaframe and Microsoft's Terminal Services.

By standardizing on Neoware thin client appliances, this National Semiconductor location is creating a cost saving alternative to the PCs and green-screen terminals they have used in the past, expanding the number of desktop devices, while minimizing administrative and maintenance hassles.

"Neoware provided the best solution that allows us to access all of our desktop applications, the Internet and email -- at a much lower cost than PCs," stated Stephen Skirving, NT Systems Manager for National Semiconductor. "By opting for thin client architecture, we can run all of our Windows and UNIX-based applications, with added reliability and significant savings of both money and administration time."
