KMG Chemicals' Matamoros Plant Awarded "Clean Plant Certificate" By PROFEPA

Rigorous Environmental Standards are Met

HOUSTON, Jan. 17, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- KMG Chemicals, Inc. (Nasdaq:KMGB), a global provider of specialty chemicals in carefully focused markets, announced that its plant in Matamoros, Mexico has recently been awarded a Clean Plant Certificate (Certificado de Industria Limpia) by PROFEPA, the Federal Agency for Environmental Protection in Mexico. The Clean Plant Certificate -- the highest honor PROFEPA offers -- requires that plants meet "the highest environmental standards for chemical plants available worldwide." Since the program began in 1997 the Clean Plant Certificate has been awarded to only 12 of the approximately 165 maquiladora plants in the Matamoros area.

David Hatcher, chief executive officer of KMG, said, "The company has invested significant resources into assuring that our facility in Mexico operates in an environmentally responsible manner. Our managers at our KMG de Mexico plant have worked very hard to qualify the plant for the PROFEPA program. The Matamoros community and our investors can be satisfied that the company has been officially recognized as operating its facility in compliance with rigorous environmental standards for the protection of water, soil and air."
