STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jan. 29, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Saab has today responded to a Request for Information regarding Australia's strategic defense structure from 2010 and beyond. Saab is confident that the advanced Saab concept for future defense would be ideally for Australia.
Australia has decided to restructure its strategic defense from 2010 and beyond. The project is called Air 6000 by the Australian armed forces. Australia has issued a request for information to a "Mix option market survey" from several companies, including the Saab Group. Saab has today submitted its response to this Request for Information.
"We are confident that Saabs concept for future defense will be ideally for Australia. We are one of the most advanced companies in this field and will hopefully be selected to continue with more in-depth studies into Australia's future defense," said Lennart Sindahl, Manager of the Future Products business area at Saab Aerospace in Linkoping.
Saab's response includes technical information about Saab Net Defenses' benefits for Australia. Saab Net Defense is Saab's concept for future network-based defense, known as Network Centric Warfare (NCW).
The response is focused on how Saab Net Defense can provide the capabilities Australia needs in order to create a strategic defense system that will meet future challenges and requirements. The response also includes a description of Saab products and concepts that fit well into the Saab Net Defense structure and may be of interest to Australia, such as UAVs, guidance systems, weapons and Gripen multi-role fighters.
The business areas -- Saab Aerospace, Saab Bofors Dynamics, and Saab Systems & Electronics, as well as Saab Systems in Australia -- have all been participating in this response to the Request for Information. The Swedish Armed Forces and Ericsson have also contributed to the response with information.
The next step is when the Australian armed forces selects a number of companies which will continue, and carry out, more in-depth studies over a couple of years, paid for by Australia. Following an analysis of these in-depth studies, purchasing from selected suppliers will commence during 2006.
