Longshore, a Long Island resident, works for the company's Airborne Early Warning and Electronic Warfare (AEW&EW) Systems business area in Bethpage. The AEW&EW business is part of the company's Integrated Systems sector.

He will receive the award at the 2002 Black Engineer of the Year awards conference in Baltimore from Ivory Tucker, vice president of Northrop Grumman's Norden Systems business unit in Norwalk, Conn. Tucker is a long-time veteran of the company's Long Island operations.

The Dean's Award goes to an individual "whose work demonstrates exceptional merit." The event honors graduates of historically black colleges and universities who have distinguished themselves in several different categories.

"Julius has been a key member of the E-2C Hawkeye program for more than two decades," said John Michaelsen, vice president, Airborne Early Warning Programs and Integrated Product Team leader. "E-2C operators in the U.S. Navy and the military of the five nations that fly our Hawkeyes know his contributions as our test pilot. Just as important, we here in Bethpage and our teammates in St. Augustine, Fla., know and appreciate his many contributions as a person and as a professional. He deserves this award."

"I'm truly honored to have been selected from among the many fine candidates under consideration for this year's Dean's Award," said Mr. Longshore. "I'm looking forward to going to Baltimore for the conference, not just to receive the Dean's Award, but also to be part of a recruitment team that will be meeting with female and minority candidates for new-hire positions within our AEW&EW Systems business area. I think it's really important to have a balanced workplace. It helps build a stronger organization, one that reflects the world we live in today. Anything I can do to further that goal in our business area will be truly fulfilling."

Longshore is a former Navy pilot, a captain in the Naval Reserve and has been a company test pilot for the past 21 years. He graduated from Clark Atlanta University with a degree in mathematics and physics in 1975. He earned his Navy pilot's wings in 1976 after attending Aviation Reserve Officer Candidate School. He served on active duty until March 1981, mainly flying E-2C Hawkeyes, which is the Navy's Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft and is flown by Egypt, France, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan.

Two years ago, Longshore logged his 5,000th flight hour in the Hawkeye out of a total of 6,000 flight hours. Only three pilots are believed to have achieved 5,000 flight hours in the E-2C.

Longshore's wife, Laurel, also works in Bethpage for AEW&EW Systems. They have two daughters, Jessica, 19, and Lindsay, 17.
