Virginia Governor Mark Warner Visits Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center


NEWPORT NEWS, Va., April 10, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- (WITH PHOTO) Virginia Governor Mark Warner visited the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center (VASCIC) Tuesday, April 10, to monitor its progress since it began operations in July 2001. The center is managed by Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Newport News sector.

The visit was the governor's first on-site inspection. Located in downtown Newport News, VASCIC was established in 1998 and is a joint effort of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the City of Newport News and Northrop Grumman's Newport News sector.

VASCIC is a state-of-the-art facility where teams of experts are developing new technologies for aircraft carriers, submarines and other advanced shipbuilding programs. The teams include Northrop Grumman Newport News, electronic system suppliers, software suppliers, U.S. Navy laboratories and program representatives and Virginia institutions of higher learning. Housed within VASCIC is a 118,000 square foot Technology Center; an 86,000 square foot laboratory; and waterfront resources to include more than 1,200 feet of bulkhead.

Northrop Grumman Newport News, headquartered in Newport News, Va., is the nation's sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two companies capable of designing and building nuclear-powered submarines. Newport News also provides after-market services for a wide array of naval and commercial vessels, and has the capability to design, build and maintain every class of ship in the U.S. Navy's fleet. The Newport News sector employs about 17,800 people.
