Nokia’s next-generation broadband network solutions chosen by Elisa Networks of Finland

Elisa Networks Ltd. of Finland and Nokia today signed a frame agreement for the delivery of Nokia’s next-generation broadband network solutions. The agreement covers the delivery of all Nokia broadband network products, including the Nokia ASR 2020 intelligent edge router, the Nokia D500 multiservice access platform, and the Nokia NetAct for Broadband management suite. To complement the D500 platform, Nokia will also continue to deliver its proven D50e DSLAM, with its cost-efficient two-stage architecture and delivery of fast Internet connectivity and frame relay service.

Elisa Networks will use the Nokia products to expand its broadband network for ADSL, G.SHDSL and VDSL based services towards an IP-based architecture. This will allow the cost-efficient introduction of a wider range of revenue-generating services, such as multimedia on demand and broadband TV over DSL. Elisa aims to be the leading broadband network operator in Finland and is currently offering broadband TV over DSL service in eastern Helsinki.

“Elisa has had a successful long-term relationship with Nokia in broadband access networks, going back to the first deliveries of the D50e DSLAM platform in 1999,” says Mr. Jukka Veteläsuo, Managing Director of Elisa Networks Ltd.  “The D500 offers the right fit for Elisa’s planned service and network evolution, while the Nokia ASR 2020 will provide us with all the functionalities required for line aggregation and termination with true ‘five nines’ reliability.  All together these products open up a range of new service possibilities to our customers and will benefit our business now and in the future.”

“We are extremely pleased that Elisa has chosen our broadband portfolio to help them evolve their network to a cost-efficient, high-revenue IP-based service architecture,” states Mr. Ari Lehtoranta, Senior Vice President, Nokia Broadband Systems.  “All of the Nokia broadband products, D500, ASR 2020 and NetAct for Broadband are media-enabled by design and are built to support operators in their transition to an All-IP based service architecture, allowing greater cost efficiencies in the delivery of voice, video and data services.”

Deliveries of the Nokia D500 will begin in August 2002, and thereafter the Nokia ASR 2020. Nokia NetAct for Broadband will be implemented as an upgrade to Elisa’s existing management suite to support the new products.

Notes to editors
The Nokia D500 Multiservice Access Platform is built with broadband multiservice, network convergence, and “All IP” as its foundation. It brings the advantages of multiservice capability to a highly scalable, high-capacity, and flexible platform that enables all of today’s services as well as meeting future needs. The D500 can be deployed either in an ATM based network, a hybrid ATM/IP based network, or be used in an All-IP based network. It is able to support both the network and the service evolution from ATM to IP and from high speed Internet to full service voice, video and data.

The industry’s first aggregation service router with “five nines” reliability, the Nokia ASR 2020 is a multiservice edge router that enables DSL aggregation with subscriber management capabilities in a single high-performance routing device for smooth, efficient migration to All-IP networks. The ASR 2020 offers aggregation of ATM, Frame Relay and IP services in a highly compact, scalable unit suited to central offices and small Points of Presence (PoPs). The ATM access and IP routing capability will also enable DSL service providers to deploy bandwidth intensive applications such as Video on Demand.

Based on a scalable and distributed J2EE-based client-server architecture, Nokia NetAct for Broadband provides an integrated management platform for all Nokia's broadband access and intelligent edge network elements including the Nokia D500 and ASR 2020.

The Nokia D50e is a proven flexible, two-stage ATM-transmission-based DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) platform, which enables operators to provide customers with high-speed DSL services ranging up to 8 Mbps through ADSL and symmetrical services through SHDSL. With the Nokia D50e platform, operators can make full use of existing network resources and coverage and provide selectable bandwidth to satisfy the increasing demand for high-speed Internet access. The Nokia D50e complements the recently announced high-density Nokia D500 multiservice access platform.
