STOCKHOLM, Sweden, July 2, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Skanska USA Civil has been awarded a contract to design and build a new subway station in Washington, D.C. The total contract is valued at USD 65.2 M - approximately SEK 600 M - of which Skanska has a 60 percent share. The customer is the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).
The contract is included in order bookings for the second quarter of 2002.
The project is being carried out through the Skanska USA Civil operating unit Slattery Skanska. This is the second contract that WMATA has awarded to Skanska in 2002. In February of this year, Slattery Skanska received a contract to design and build a 5-kilometer extension of the Blue Line of the Washington Metrorail subway system. Skanska has 30 percent, or USD 65.4 M, of the total contract amount of USD 218 M. In both cases, Slattery Skanska is cooperating with Lane Construction Corporation of Meriden, Connecticut.
The new station will be called the New York Avenue Station, and it is being built on the Red Line, which links suburbs in Maryland with central Washington, D.C. The station will be built adjacent to the fully operative line and then tied into the system once construction is completed.
Since the 1970s, Slattery Skanska has completed several assignments for this client - including L'Enfant Plaza Station, Friendship Heights Station, and the Potomac River Bridge.
The American infrastructure sector has been strong for several years, due in part to the federal TEA-21 initiative. According to American Society of Civil Engineers, mass transit riding in the U.S. increased 15 percent since 1995.
Slattery Skanska's ongoing railway projects include the AirTrain Light Rail airport access system for JFK Airport, the extension of the subway in San Francisco including two stations, and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail System in New Jersey, as well as two train yard and maintenance facilities - Highbridge in the Bronx and Arch Street in Long Island City, New York. In addition, Slattery Skanska and Gottlieb Skanska are rebuilding the Lexington/53rd Street Station and the Times Square Station in New York.
