Skanska Enhancing Airport Security in the U.S.; USD 120 M, SEK 1.1 Billion, Contract at Tampa International Airport

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Sept. 9, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Skanska will carry out one of the first major airport security enhancement projects at a U.S. airport since the terror attacks last year. The American business unit, Beers Skanska, has been awarded a contract to design, construct and install improved security systems at the Tampa International Airport in Florida. The contract is valued at USD 120 million, SEK 1.125 million. The customer is the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority. The contract is included in the order bookings for the third quarter of 2002.

The new, stricter requirements for U.S. airport security were established by the U.S. government in legislation signed on November 19, 2001, as a result of the terror attacks on September 11, 2001.

The legislation created a Transportation Security Administration and a uniform, consistent security standard at U.S. airports, including the provision that by the end of 2003 all checked baggage is to be inspected with explosives detection machines.

The Beers Skanska project involves the design and construction of a new outbound baggage handling system with explosives detection equipment, terminal passenger screening checkpoints and service road and parkway security checkpoints. In addition, Beers Skanska will also construct a short-term parking garage entrance shelter and other infrastructure and facility upgrades to meet regulatory requirements for safety and security.

This is Beers Skanska's second assignment for the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority. Beers Skanska is nearly completed with the new USD 65 Million design-build Airside Terminal E project at the Tampa International Airport.

"The tremendous success of Airside E was a major factor in our selection for the Security Enhancements Program," stated John White, Group President, Aviation at Beers Skanska.
