Urbitran Completes St. John's University Soccer Stadium

Unique Facility Sits Atop Parking Garage on Jamaica, Queens Campus

NEW YORK, Sept. 23, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Urbitran Associates is pleased to announce the completion of Belson Soccer Stadium, at St. John's University in Jamaica, N.Y., which was dedicated on Saturday evening, September 21. This unique facility, built with a generous gift from Jerome and Maxine Belson, sits atop an integrated parking structure and gives the University's Red Storm NCAA Division 1 team a truly world-class soccer facility.

Led by Urbitran, this design-build structure went from contract to completion in less than eight months. It is unique in that it is the first known use anywhere in the world of FIFA-approved Field Turf above a parking deck, and provides an intimate setting for 2,300 spectators with seats only 12 feet from the field. Underneath, the parking facility that is invisible from field level was designed with safety and security in mind, and accommodates 284 cars on a single level -- an integral part of the stadium structure.

Design work and fabrication were able to run concurrently by using a pre-cast structure and pre-ordering materials. Urbitran was the architect and engineer of record with responsibility for site work, structural engineering and design of the parking platform. Urbitran, in conjunction with Arquitectonica, developed the sporting infrastructure and teamed with HRH for construction management. UA Construction, a subsidiary of Urbitran, also provided construction management, and construction support for several site improvement activities.
