PrecisePLAN for IMRT Gains FDA 510(k) Clearance: Elekta Provides Integrated IMRT Workflow for Cancer Centers

NORCROSS, Ga., Oct. 7, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- With the advent of new technology, the separation between radiation treatment delivery and treatment planning has been narrowing. At Elekta, our development teams have been working together to deliver an innovative approach to integration in radiation therapy. As a result, Elekta today announced the availability of PrecisePLAN(R) for IMRT. PrecisePLAN brings a new degree of productivity and ease to optimized IMRT treatment planning.

This new system utilizes an aperture-based inverse planning technique developed by Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. This innovative approach creates geometric or dosimetric field segments that conform to the Planning Target Volume (PTV), while shielding the healthy organs.

This IMRT technique offers the busy clinician several major advantages:

-- Standard protocols using a Workflow Manager
-- No delivery compromises introduced by the fluence interpreter
    software
 -- Better Monitor Unit efficiency
-- Simple statement of dose objectives

"Elekta reinforces its commitment to both existing customers and to the Oncology market for treatment planning," stated Peter Gaccione, VP of Oncology at Elekta. "We believe that in the future, treatment planning will be much more integrated into the treatment delivery process and Elekta has the talent and core competencies to be a leader in this evolution. To that end, PrecisePLAN for IMRT will be an integral part of the Elekta IMRT delivery system for Cancer Centers looking for an integrated solution."

The aperture-based approach produces intuitive and sensible segments, greatly simplifying the IMRT verification process.

Using the Workflow Manager, complex or everyday clinical steps can be streamlined into clinical protocols. Now, the user can view and manage the entire workflow process:

  Structure Contouring
  3-D structure expansions
  Beam Placement
  Segment Generation
  Dose Optimization
  Hardcopy and DICOM RT export
  Phantom Plan Verification.
