HERNDON, Va., Oct. 23, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- A team led by Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Information Technology (IT) sector has received a six-year $63.8 million contract option for the next-generation information system that will improve the ability to provide near real-time visibility of passengers and material moving through the Defense Transportation Systems (DTS). Northrop Grumman IT will be providing the initial operational capability of the Global Transportation Network-21 (GTN-21) as part of this exercised option awarded by the U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM).
The Northrop Grumman team was one of four contractor teams selected to compete in the four-month, first phase of GTN-21, which ended in August. At the completion of this phase, USTRANSCOM selected Northrop Grumman IT for Phase II, with option terms that extend for up to 15 years with a potential value of $204.7 million.
"DTS provides the United States with a critical and essential strategic mobility capability. GTN-21 is important because it will serve as the core operational data system for USTRANSCOM and set the technical standard for DTS information systems," said Barry Rhine, president, Defense Mission Systems, Northrop Grumman IT.
"Northrop Grumman IT has unique software development expertise, achieving up to a Level 3 rating, the highest possible, on the Software Engineering Institute's Capability Maturity Model."
Two key objectives of GTN-21 are to improve Intransit Visibility (ITV), which is the ability to track the identity, status and location of any passenger or piece of cargo moving through the DTS, and expand command and control decision support capabilities. Accessible and reliable ITV is essential for military planners and decision-makers.
Other members of the Northrop Grumman team include Accenture and Bermuda Stanley Associates, Alexandria, Va.; Dynamic Process Solutions, Inc., O'Fallon, Ill.; Integrated Information Technology Corporation, Denver, Colo.; Asynchrony Solutions, Inc., St. Louis, Mo.; MILVETS Systems Technology, Lanham, Md.; P3I Inc., Hopkinton, Mass.; and Digital Consulting Services Inc, Los Angeles, Calif. Work on the program will be performed at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.
