`A Good Run': Rising from Ruins -- All Alone, a Young Man Must Begin his Life Again

VILLA HILLS, Ky., Oct. 25, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- How does a man start a new life after war if his family is all dead and his home gone? Authors Keith Stuart and Barbara Phillips Stuart tell readers the story of Joseph McDonald, a noble man who rises after the Civil War to the hope and dreams of a new America forged on the belief that all men are created equal, in their heart-rending adventure/romance novel, "A Good Run" (now available through 1stBooks Library).

Fresh from his fighting for the South in the Civil War, 20-year-old Private Joseph McDonald has no place to go. With his family dead and his home gone, Joseph heads west and settles in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he first works on a riverboat. His adventures begin when a gang of pirates attacks their riverboat. Joseph subdues all the pirates except for one, who escapes and vows to kill him. His journey eventually leads him to renegade Comanche Indians; later, he becomes a hero of the Cherokees after showing them how to protect their land from speculators.

Just when he has already settled into the Cherokee community, Joseph uncovers from his past a secret that drastically changes his life. Then, following a tragedy, Joseph fights with Roosevelt in the Spanish-American War. Later, Roosevelt asks for Joseph's help in a government scheme that not only takes him around the world, but also puts his life in danger.

Couple and co-authors Keith Stuart and Barbara Phillips Stuart share many interests in life, including world travel and writing. Keith, born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, worked as a deckhand, farm laborer, logger and factory worker during the early years of his life. He also served in the infantry during the Korean War, after which he completed his studies, including a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology.

Barbara was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. She developed a flair for writing at an early age. For six years, she wrote vignettes that were featured weekly in the Douglas Dispatch, in Douglas, Arizona.

The Stuarts currently live in Villa Hill, Kentucky, with their dog, Benjie. They have nine children and eighteen grandchildren.
