Qantas Airways Selects Northrop Grumman's LTN-92 Navigation System for Its B747-300 Fleet

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif., Oct. 29, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Navigation Systems Division has been selected by Qantas Airways to supply LTN-92 Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) for installation in its fleet of Boeing 747-300 aircraft.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"Enhanced reliability, improved accuracy and minimal wiring change requirements are benefits offered by the LTN-92," said Vince Peccitto, LTN-92 program manager. "It reduces the cost of incorporating GPS, supports incremental installations and can be tailored to meet customer needs.

"Current aircraft operational requirements are met by the LTN-92, and it provides a growth path to meet future regulatory requirements. This INS utilizes Ring Laser Gyroscopes and is the ideal choice for replacement of earlier, low-reliability 'spinning wheel' inertial systems," added Peccitto.

The LTN-92 is an ARINC 561 strapdown INS with full ARINC 704 digital interface capability. ARINC publishes the international avionics standards for form, fit and function established by the Airlines Electronic Engineering Committee, an international standards organization.

An optional onboard worldwide navigational database, global navigation sensor system interface capability and a 1553B data bus can be added to the LTN-92. More than 2,500 LTN-92s have been delivered.

Inertial navigation system deliveries under the contract will begin in November, with all of the installations scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2003.

Based in Woodland Hills, Northrop Grumman's Navigation Systems Division provides situational awareness for the defense, civil and commercial markets. It offers integrated avionics, inertial navigation and guidance systems, satellite electronics, identification friend or foe systems, rugged conventional and smart displays, fiber-optic sensors and systems, and logistic support products and services.
