`Landing Was the Easy Part': A Gripping Chronicle by a WWII Fighter Plane Pilot

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 1, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- In a nerve-racking, spine-tingling narrative of wartime episodes and dramatic moments, Edward Pappert's "Landing Was the Easy Part" (now available through 1stBooks Library) recounts what life is all about aboard an aircraft carrier during World War II. It also highlights those thrilling and dangerous seconds when these aircraft carriers strike against the land of Japan.

This bracing account commences as Pappert, belonging to Air Group 83, boards the aircraft carrier named The Essex on March 11, 1945. As he writes about the life aboard this carrier, he takes readers with him on strikes against the Japanese homeland, and when his wingman is shot down, the reader spends the night on Japanese soil with him, waiting for his subsequent rescue. He includes tales describing a division of Marine Pilots that can't find their way back to the carrier, the pathetic sinking of the Japanese battleship, The Yamato, and the invasion of Okinawa.

An excerpt about a nearly disastrously gone-wrong dawn take-off from the carrier reads, "Two small lights can be seen in the ocean. Both pilots got out and turned on the one cell light attached to their May West (inflatable jacket). Thank God for the tin cans (Destroyers). They picked up both pilots."

For those who weren't born before 1945 -- or those that were -- "Landing Was the Easy Part" gives a vivid account of what took place during that unforgettable era in world history. Pappert knows how to convey his message in a manner that is understandable for all ages.

Ed Pappert was born December 3, 1920 in Pittsburgh, PA. He grew up in Dormont, a suburb of Pittsburgh. After high school, Ed worked at U.S. Steel in the metallurgical lab. He worked from 11 p.m. till 7 a.m. and attended classes at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) during the day. Ed applied for and was accepted into the V5 program. This led to his becoming a pilot and an Ensign in the U.S. Navy on December 17, 1943. He qualified as a fighter pilot. After the war, Ed finished his college at Penn State University. He took a job with United States Gypsum Co. He worked for USG for 37 years, attaining the position of VP and General Manager of the companies largest division. Pappert currently resides in Charlotte, N.C. with his wife and children.
