Jews: America's Unsung Combat Heroes; Uncle Sam's Colorful War History is Replete With Jewish Courage and Heroism

RIVERSIDE, Calif., Nov. 1, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Howard J. Leavitt's "Footsteps of David: Common Roots, Uncommon Valor" (now available through 1st Books Library) tells the war stories of American-Jewish heroes. It pays tribute to the unsung heroics and daring of Jewish soldiers in the rich history of America's quest for liberty and self-determination.

"Footsteps of David" acquaints the reader with dozens of stories of Jewish-American soldiers. While other ethnic/religious groups have all made their contribution to the aggrandizement, success and defense of the American nation, the Jewish role has been ignored. This book attempts to correct that oversight and fill that void.

One tale that "Footsteps of David" shares with the reader is that of Bud Newman, the Jewish-American Marine credited for bringing down the first Japanese plane at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. "Footsteps of David" acquaints the reader with dozens of stories of Jewish-American heroes, their role, service and sacrifice in the military. Some of the participants are well-known, most are obscure, unnotice, and unpublicized. An enlisted man himself, Leavitt banks on his experiences as a U.S. Marine to add credence and color to his writing.

Born in Boston, Mass., Howard J. Leavitt is recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korea Service Medal, the ROK Presidential Unit Citation and the Marine Sharpshooter Medal. Leavitt taught Spanish and French for 30 years in a high school in California and has traveled extensively in Korea, Tunisia, Mexico, Cuba, Europe and Japan. He also served as a volunteer for the Riverside Police Department. Howard now lives in Riverside, Calif.a where he operates a small photography business and at the same time nurtures his passion for writing about Jews in the military.
