A Cherokee Rose Blossoms Despite Thorns in a Historical Fiction Classic

FORT WORTH, Texas, Nov. 6, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- The early days of American history were fraught with danger, deception and difficult choices. Author Joseph H. Vann has captured the intensity of the times and the people in his new book "Cherokee Rose: On Rivers of Golden Tears" (now available from 1stBooks Library).

Scotsman John Joseph Vann and Cherokee Princess Waw-Li wed, despite their utterly opposite cultures. Their plan is to establish a royal dynasty on the Blue Smokey Mountains together. However, their son, James, is born `backwards' and is cursed and condemned by the tribe's shaman. James is forced to make his own way in the world -- surviving six death sentences, the treachery of the shaman, the conniving minor chiefs, the Georgia Guard, and even future president Andrew Jackson. James, through his own intelligence and resolve, becomes the wealthiest man in Georgia.

But his adventures are not limited to personal power struggles. He rides with Chickamaugan warriors, defending his mother's land, and even visits President Washington as a District Judge to appeal the sale of Cherokee land to a white investor. However, James' good intentions are not enough and eventually he is assassinated. Son Joseph (Rich Joe) inherits Diamond Hill Plantation, the Crown of the Cherokee Nation, and pioneers the steamboat trade.

An epic tale that has been compared to "Gone with the Wind," and "Lonesome Dove," "Cherokee Rose" is destined to become a historical fiction classic.

Author Joseph H. Vann first published his writing at age ten, running a story titled "All-American College Football Team" in the Dallas Herald. Vann has lived in a wheelchair seven years. He completed the book while recovering from two cancer surgeries and radiology infection. He says that his childhood during the Great Depression was a "happy time, with a close family." His careers have run the gamut from Sunday school teacher to trucking company manager. The father of six, Vann resides in Fort Worth, Texas, with his wife, Frances.
